I’m having the hardest time coming up with a title for this piece. I still don’t know if this should be considered complete as well. The urge to tinker and fix mistakes still tempt me. I’m going to reprint this project because the possibilities that collage brings gives me the capability to work multiple compositions. I’m hoping the next version I create might be used for the upcoming show. Still not sure what will be needed yet, but the excitement has not worn off.

Yay.

Projects are starting to snowball. Last year I was struggling to put together ideas, while this year there’s too many to juggle. I have two books waiting to be printed, a linoleum to carve and print, an eight-foot tall monster to silkscreen, as well as various sketches to develop and blocks to reprint. Guh, too much!

P.S. Don’t forget the poll from last post, I still need more input!

I’m planning a trilogy of art books this semester. I hope to make more than just three, but definitely working with this set. The first book is Moth, the second and third will be Bird and Bee.

This is the first time I made/attempted an edition of books. I usually just aim for one. It was difficult to do, my materials were low and my money short. I somehow managed! There are eight in all, with five decent ones and three really crappy ones.

It’s very long. I’m doing another version of this print in a bigger size. MUCH bigger.

Front side was relief printed, backside is screen printed. The story is written there, but I don’t really know how to go about documenting this book. It would be hard to digitize it without it becoming awkward. I’ll have to see how professional book artists display their books online.

I manage to finally update the site! There is now a “books” section to the site. I moved some artwork that fit better there and I added a slew of new books. Most have been seen throughout my blogging, but it’s nice to have it all in one place.

I also got rid of my “contact” page and display my email in the “Welcome” section of the sidebar and the “about” page. Hope this is not confusing, it seemed more efficient to do that. I like to minimize where it makes sense.

Have a good week. I’m going to try and keep this posting momentum going!

Anyway, all I do is begin the foundation of what will be their online catalog system for their library, something that would be functional for the public to use when they want to research for projects. It’s fun. I took some cameraphone photos of some of the books I see each week.

In other news, I miss my camera. It went defunct some weeks ago. Hopefully I’ll get a camera by the end of summer. It’s essential to my blogging and some of my art process/documentation. I suppose in the meantime I’ll rely on scanning and taking photos of with my phone/laptop. Bah.

I’ll post in the next day or so (probably Wednesday) on the book project so far. I don’t know how much I’ll work on the book for the rest of graduate school, but this is the new work that is likely to evolve for the following year.

The top piece was the last piece finished, the ones below were the experiments/studies that built up to it:

I’m going to try and draw/print bigger over the summer and fall. The figures/portraits will probably go in the direction of the last etching that I posted, where the figure is more hidden under a surreal hat of sorts. Nothing is definite however, so I guess I’ll just keep track of the progression as it follows during the summer months.

With semester over, I actually have time to read some books and goof off (more) online. Here’s two of them. I’ll probably post more as the break progresses.

Castle Waiting: by Linda Medley

I have the nice hardbound version of this book. The story blends all the familiar folk tales as well as some obscure. It’s lighthearted and humorous. The drawing is also lovely and whimsical and does not fall into conventional comic book or manga stylings. You can get a short synopsis that’s better than anything I’ll write up on its wikipedia page.

Garfield Minus Garfield: webcomic, I guess.

Just as the title states. It’s the Garfield cartoon strip, minus Garfield, who is erased out with Photoshop. One of my graduate classmates told me about this site. Essentially, what you realize is that Jon Arbuckle is immediately transformed into something largely unnoticed when you take away the cat he “talks” to. The strips tend to get repetitive, but it’s worth at least reading thirty strips.
